Scouts associate head coach and director of scouting, Justin DeMartino announced Friday that he has accepted a position with the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League (USHL) as Assistant Coach.
“I would like to thank Mr. Hunt and Simon Watson for a phenomenal two and a half years with the Topeka Pilots and Kansas City Scouts. This is a first-class organization from top to bottom,” said DeMartino. “I have loved my time coaching in the NAHL and can’t thank Simon enough for always pushing me and allowing me to grow as a coach and a person. Kansas City has become a second home for me, and I will cherish these memories for the rest of my life.”
Prior to coaching in Kansas City, DeMartino was associate head coach and director of scouting for the Topeka Pilots and assistant coach and interim head coach for the Topeka RoadRunners.
DeMartino started his coaching career as a volunteer assistant for his alma mater, Ferris State University. As a volunteer, he primarily did video and individual skill sessions/workouts with players and goaltenders.
While playing for the Bulldogs from 2010-2014, DeMartino was a part of the 2012 team that finished Runner Up at the Frozen Four and the 2014 team that won the WCHA tournament and lost to North Dakota in the Elite 8. He graduated in 2014 with a degree in Sports Communications.
“We would like to thank Justin for all of his hard work and dedication to this program. A phenomenal recruiter with an infectious personality, there is no doubt Justin will continue to climb the hockey ranks. We wish him the best in his new position in Youngstown,” said head coach, Simon Watson.
